We’ve already pointed towards a round-up of possible Total War: Rome 2 fixes for FPS issues and campaign map lag, but here’s one I found while combing the Steam community forums in search of a way to stop the game committing acts of grievous bodily harm against my PC.
It’s a bit strange. I have no idea why it works, but it did improve matters for me. The campaign map started to look less horrific and managed to get out of the sub-20 FPS doldrums. It doesn’t run great now, but it is actually playable. For some reason, doing this also made the previously broken-looking font/typeface readable again. So that was nice.
Here’s what you do:
1). Locate “C/users/USERNAME/appdata/roaming/thecreativeassembly/rome2/scripts” on your PC. Delete the preferences.script in there (this is your graphics settings and stuff – don’t worry it’ll be coming back soon.)
2). Right-click Total War: Rome 2 in your Steam library and make your way to the “local files” tab, where you can click the “verify game cache” option. Wait for a bit, because this will take a while.
3). Find the folder “Steam/Steamapps/Common/TotalwarRomeII/redist/directx” on your PC and install DirectX with the “DXSETUP” application located here.
4). Download the latest beta drivers for your Nvidia or AMD card from their respective sites.
5). Fire up Rome 2 again and tinker with your graphics settings. The most demanding ones seem to be Shadows and Unit Detail, so you may have to bump those down a bit for now until Creative Assembly sorts things out. Personally, I also turned off SSAO and “distortion effects.” Switching on the “unlimited video memory” option helped a bit too.
6). Hopefully enjoy the game with slightly better FPS.
Again, this isn’t a full fix and may not even do the trick for you. However, it did improve matters for me so it could be worth a try. For the record, I’m using an i3-2100 / 8gb RAM / HD 6850 setup.

[Update]: The first patch is also out now, in beta form. It may help.
[Update 2]: The second patch is available in beta form now, and has fixes for quite a range of issues. I’d recommend giving it a try too.
When players datamined the upcoming DLC for Total War: Rome 2, it kept everyone on the edge of their seats. After all, the earlier time period when Rome was but a fledgling republic was rarely explored in the Total War franchise. A few days passed and we learned that the campaign pack will be known as Rise of the Republic, out today.
It features Rome’s earliest days battling city-states such as Syracuse and Italian tribes like the Samnites. Oh, and players can also choose the Senones, a tribe of Gauls under Brennus, to sack the Eternal City.
Total War: Rome 2 – Rise of the Republic

That wait is over now with the release of Rise of the Republic. The new offering will include the aforementioned factions and many others in a more detailed map of Italy and the surrounding isles. Set during the 4th Century BC, we can also expect the eventual intervention of Massalia and pre-Hannibal Carthage.
So far, community response has been somewhat positive. The Total War franchise has a dedicated player base that clamors constantly for new content and updates. There are, however, a few smatterings of discontent such as slowdowns and lag due to graphical tweaks as well as enemy army AI. For instance, one player cited that enemy tribes just kept besieging and sacking cities, then running off. That’s pretty much a given historically, though it’s a major annoyance to deal with in a game.
Alongside the Rise of the Republic campaign pack, Creative Assembly included the Ancestral Update. The update aims to overhaul Rome 2 The crew pc ocean of games. ‘s dynastic/family trees. Players will now be able to do Intrigue actions to subvert opposing political parties and boost their own repute. Marriages received an overhaul, and couples can now make more babies to continue the dynastic line. Agents and generals have also received some tweaks. Their abilities are now more faction specific than before.
The Ancestral Update is available for all owners of Total War: Rome 2.

Rome Total War Campaign Map Lag
posted 08 January 2008 08:32 EDT (US) Quick question, I Have a laptop that runs RTW fairly low settings: 1.4 Ghz processor, 768 Ram (256 + 512) and 64mb Video card. I have a problem that the screen in campaign map lags a lot and clicking build and training icons, changing taxes etc takes a while. Over the course of a campaign this can be very annoying. If I up the ram to 1GB will this make much of a difference or is it the limit of the processor and graphics that are holding me back? Any ideas would be welcome. Plan to buy a good desktop at some point in near future and see what RTW is like at full whack, currently on low battle resolution and most effects off or low, to keep it running fairly well on the laptop (sorry notebook). | |

posted 08 January 2008 10:45 EDT (US) 1 / 6 I've got only 512 MB of RAM and a 64 MB videocard just as you, but I have a 2.40 GHz processor and rarely experience lag on the campaign map. So I guess it's the limits of your processor that's holding you back. Upgrading the processor of a notebook usually is quite hard, because all components are placed close together. Another way of speeding up your game might be to switch to a lower resolution for the campaign map. |
Chalupa Batman Centurion (id: ccsantos) | posted 08 January 2008 17:42 EDT (US) 2 / 6 When you're on the campaign map go to video settings and turn off shadows and lower the resolution as Hussarknight suggested. Upgrading your system's memory might make a slight difference, but your processor speed might need an upgrade as well (aforementioned it is hard to do). Lowering your graphics options during game play may show noticeable improvement, try doing that first. |
mikecz Legionary | posted 08 January 2008 20:06 EDT (US) 3 / 6 I think your biggest problem is the CPU itself. IIRC, most of us felt by the time that RTW had been out a few months that you really needed about a 2 gHz CPU for a fairly satisfactory game experience. Similar to Hussarknight, I started playing the game on a 2.6 gHz P4 with 512 mB SDRAM & an nVidia 5200Fx with 128 mB memory. The strategy map commands for cities & unit moves on the strategy map were always fine. When I went up to 'large' unit size, I had to tune most visuals down or off to get a good game, especially when battles were between 2 at- or near-full strength armies. Slightly oddly (until you think about how much of it there is on a battlefield) setting grass/vegetation detail to lowest setting may have the biggest positive effect on battle map performance. Now I have another gig of SDRAM & upgraded to an nVidia 7600GS with 512 megs onboard RAM & all but the biggest battles run nicely most of the time, with most visuals at high or highest settings - AND that's with the World Community Grid's BOINC distributed computing client running too! (I should remember to turn that off when I'm gaming, I guess!) |
posted 08 January 2008 21:56 EDT (US) 4 / 6 (I should remember to turn that off when I'm gaming, I guess!)I just thought of something else you might want to check out. If you go to Start>Run> type 'msconfig' press Enter >go to the 'Startup' tab and see if there are any programs that are running at startup that may be taking up any memory that is not necessary to have running. Uncheck the boxes and restart the computer and less memory will be used, albiet it might not make a big difference if its not a memory hogging process. Cheers |
SubRosa Legionary | posted 08 January 2008 22:21 EDT (US) 5 / 6 I also suggest turning off your anti-virus software before starting the game. Especially if it is Norton. posted 09 January 2008 08:52 EDT (US) 6 / 6 When you turn of you anti-virus software, do make sure you're not connected to the Internet. And if you are going to disable some processes from being started at startup make sure they aren't vital to your machine's health, e.g. anti-virus software. |

Now, as I understand it, Medieval 2 uses the same engine as Rome only with very minor tweaks to make it compatible with the vision for that game. yet that run's fine, albeit a little laggy in battles which is entirely fine as I'm not expecting an unoptimized years old game to run perfectly on a modern rig. However, if I'm running Medieval 2 not bad, why's Rome so terrible?
I'm currently running it on:
- AMD Athlon X3 3.2Ghz
- ATI HD 5670 1Gb
- Windows 7 64bit
Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated. Like I said it runs fine elsewhere in the game, but actually moving the camera on the campaign map grinds the game to a halt. Totally unplayable as you can appreciate considering a lot of the campaign is about moving the map around. I love my total war games, but this is an annoyance considering Rome is the only one I'm left to play.
